Roper Cup 2018 Shared by STGC & KC

It was a very entertaining afternoon of football at Winchester Park today. The sun was bright and the conditions windy but tolerable on an immaculate playing surface of Winchester Park.

In the young school boy games, STGC went down to KC by 3-0 in the Under 14. In the Under 16, the game drew 0-0.

In the bigger boys’ games, STGC’s U 35 look very good but couldn’t find the net to make the difference. The game was played in good spirt and near to the end of the game, both teams rotated their players so that all 20 or so on each squad had a chance to play. This game ended 0-0.

In the Over 35, the Georgians were just too good as they beat their counterpart 3-1. We had the opportunity to see Robbie Scott from Tivoli playing out on the wing. I believed I saw a very large Ali Rose running up front for us. Michael ‘Fox’ Forbes also made a stint in goal. This team was very interesting as the age ranged from 65( Eric Barrett), Mr. Dabdoub, age 66 to the younger oldsters, ‘Yo Yo’ and Robbie who probably just turned 40.

We also had players from the USA like Sean Campbell son of famed referee ‘Dirks’ Campbell coming down to participate.

In the main feature, the Knights played very well. They look compact in defense, move forward with purpose and were creating good chances. KC is said to be one of the favorites this season but seemed a bit taken aback by the way the Georgians were pulling the strings. We went ahead early in the first half when, after a good build up, our midfielder got a clear sight of the goal from just outside the penalty area to bury the ball into the back of the net.

In the second half, KC tried to up the tempo and started furiously. The Knights though were very organized and disciplined and soon we again took control. We were unlucky not to extend the lead as some sizzling shots from the Georgian attackers just missed the mark.

KC would get a lucky break late in the game when our wingback carelessly failed to clear which allowed an unmarked KC attacker to score. The game ended 1-1.

So, from what we saw today, we expect the Georgians to be well up there with the pack contending for the spoils.

It was a good show by the Light Blue Manning Cup team.
