A Tribute to CARL ANTHONY CHANG
April 21, 1944 – October 11, 2011
From the Directors of the Board of the
St. George’s College Old Boys’ Association | Ontario Chapter
“We did not see you close your eyes,
We did not see you die,
All we knew was that you were gone,
Without a last goodbye.
It was a sudden parting,
Too bitter to forget,
Only those who loved you,
Are the ones who will never forget.
The happy hours that we once enjoyed,
How sweet their memory still,
But death has left a vacant place,
This world can never fill.
Your life was one of kindly deeds,
A helping hand for others needs
Sincere and true in heart and mind
Beautiful memories left behind”
|From Memorial Mass, Kingston, Jamaica, October 20, 2011|
Carl Anthony Chang lived a life full of passion, touching the hearts of many with his fire.
He was taken from us unexpectedly on October 11, 2011 but has left a host of fond memories and a Georgian legacy that will survive him.
Carl, a Director of the Ontario Chapter of the St. George’s College Old Boys’ Association, served his alma mater loyally and worked assiduously for the improvement and advancement of the college. As our Liaison Director, he spent much of his time in Jamaica on the school campus and was in constant communication by phone and email with our Board members, giving constant updates on the renovation projects which he managed at the school. He single-handedly supervised the renovation of the historic O’hare Building and subsequently pioneered the construction of the Lawrence A. Burke Centre, a building of 10 classrooms which is due to be completed, March 2012. He raised millions of Jamaican dollars for the school and contributed equal amounts from his own personal resources to help friends, workers, students and those in need. His generosity was boundless.
Our sincerest condolences go out to his family whom he loved dearly. He has left behind a loving family, his wife, Paula, his children, Jillian, Kerry-Anne (Warren Hoo Fung), Tracy, and Michael, grandsons, Jordan and James, sisters Mavis, Barbara, Dorothy, Juliet (Richard Jones) and Angela (Abraham Wong), Uncle Archie and Aunts Cecelia, Elsie and Barbara, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
We extend prayers and comfort to you all in this time of sorrow.
We miss you, Carl Chang, a great Georgian, a Knight of St. George, who gave selflessly of his time, his resources and his love, as a man for others.
In memory of his great dedication to St. George’s College, so that his spirit may continue to dwell in the hearts and minds of Georgians, the Old Boys’ Association of Ontario will be offering an annual scholarship in his name, CARL ANTHONY CHANG, to cover the tuition fees for a deserving graduate to complete his two year program of studies in sixth form at St. George’s College.
His legacy at St. George’s College will live on. He has made his fellow Georgians proud to know that one person could give back so much to his alma mater and that one person could make such a difference in the lives of so many.
He was the true embodiment of the graduate of a Jesuit College, for he did good works, not for himself, but for the greater Glory of God, ad majorem dei gloriam.
We salute you, Carl, for your friendship, your spirit of generosity and your service to our our alma mater. May your soul forever rest in peace.
